Enjoy this 11.1-mile out-and-back trail near Markleeville, California. Generally considered a challenging route, it takes an average of 5 h 37 min to complete. This trail is great for backpacking, fishing, and hiking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are June through October. The trail takes you past 4 alpine lakes and allows some great views of Caples Lake. The trail is about 5 miles each way and starts out around 8500 ft and has a high point of 9400 ft. Awe-inspiring scenery and idyllic alpine lakes await you on the Fourth of July Lake Trail. This pleasant trail leads adventurers through lush pine forests and flowering montane meadows before opening to the scene of the glacial pool nestled in the White Cloud Mountains. A nice hike with a gradual incline through rich forests and lush meadows to a beautiful lake nestled in a meadow at the base of towering mountains. An excellent day hike for most everyone and an excellent overnight hike for youth. Sharp eyes may see many types of wildlife, including deer, elk and sheep. Hiking to 4th of July makes for a great short hike or shorter backpack. It is 1.5 miles to the lake. There are also trails that continue either up to the Antz Basin saddle and the Born Lakes or Washington Lake. Short trail through trees to beautiful lakes. Very popular.The hike to Fourth of July Lake is one of the easiest hikes to a high elevation lake in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The trail begins at the Fourth of July Trailhead There is a steady uphill from the parking area at the end of a bumpy gravel road. Forested for the first half, then the trail emerges in spots for views across the canyon towards Diamond Lake area and Diamond Creek Falls. This isn’t really a trail. It’s just the road to the 4th of July trailhead. The road isn’t too bad to drive on. I was able to get through with my RAV4. Definitely don’t recommend a low vehicle or sedan. I was approached by a very strange guy at the top of the road (the police were called). Please be careful. The hike is very scenic with spectacular views of 4th of July Creek, spring run off falls, mountain vistas and the stunning lake at the end. The distance to the lake is 1.8 miles. Less traveled option from Upper Blue Lake on the old summit City trailhead – Travel up to fourth of July lake along Summit city creek old mining country. Starting from Forestdale Divide, the trail leads downhill through meadows and open forest past an area that was once an active mining community. The Fourth of July Lake is located in the Mokelumne Wilderness of the Sierra Mountains. It is situated in the Carson Pass management area of the wilderness which is the most visited section. The draw is the outstanding lakes that frequent the northern parts of the Mokelumne. After several miles, you'll reach your halfway point at Fourth of July Lake which features a great shady picnic spot to stop before heading back. The trail is well-marked and easy to navigate. A Wilderness Permit is required for all overnight trips to the Mokelumne Wilderness Area. The trail also leads past Winnemucca, Round Top, and Fourth of July Lake. There are amazing views of the surrounding granite peaks as you hike between the lakes.
