Backcountry ski potential Yes: Restroom: Yes: Dogs: No: About: 4th of July Pass is a great place to ski or snowshoe because it starts from a high point afforded by the 4th of July Summit. Three loop trails wind through stately cedar, fir, and pine forests. The snowshoeing trails are almost as extensive as the groomed ski trails. Try an adventure to North Idaho’s Fourth of July Pass and enjoy the Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Trail System. Whether classic or skate cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or other winter sports, spending time with friends and family outside in the wintry-fresh air provides great exercise as well as comradery. Fourth of July Pass is about a half hour East of Coeur d’Alene and is the western gateway to the Silver Valley. How lucky we are to have an awesome cross-country ski area less than 30 minutes from our house, and we don’t have to sit in hours of mountain traffic to get there! Chipmunk Rapids (Non-motorized): A Park & Ski location near Priest Lake with 10 miles of mixed-use trails. Bonus: it’s dog-friendly. Fourth of July Pass (Non-motorized): 7.8 miles of Nordic trails and a separate area for snowshoeing just off I-90 east of Coeur d’Alene. There is a nice warming cabin near the parking lot. Located eleven miles east of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho at exit 28 off I-90, Fourth of July Pass Recreation area provides a fun place to play in the winter. The Nordic trail system is groomed via snowmobile with tracks set along most of the trail system. The trails are great for classic skiing. Thanks to the Panhandle Nordic Club, the US Forest Service, the Idaho State Parks, and the Recreation Department the 4th of July Nordic Ski Area is cooperatively managed and maintained. The best The Fourth of July Park has approximately 25 miles of cross country ski and snowshoe trails with 8 miles for track skiing in the winter, and for hiking, biking, and nature walks in warmer seasons. Park N’ Ski permits are required November 15 – April 30. North Idaho: Hanna Flats – 33 miles North of Priest River off State Highway 57 At just over 3000 feet altitude, snow-sufficiency can be hit or miss at the Fourth of July Recreation area. When there’s enough, this is a convenient and popular cross-country skiing and snowshoeing area, located just minutes from I-90. Enjoy this 5.7-mile loop trail near Cataldo, Idaho. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 33 min to complete. This is a popular trail for birding, cross-country skiing, and hiking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. Fourth of July Pass is a great place to ski or snowshoe given the high altitude view found at 4th of July Summit. Cross-country skiing can also be found along the Centennial Trail, which runs from the east end of Lake Coeur d’Alene to Spokane, through Post Falls. What is the Fourth of July Pass for Cross-Country Skiing? The Fourth of July Pass, located approximately 23 miles east of Coeur d’Alene and accessible via I-90 (Exit 28), is a popular destination for cross-country skiers. 4th of July trail amenities include 12.1 mi (19.4 km) of groomed ski trails with a total of 17.8 mi (28.5 km) of skiing. 15.7 mi (25.1 km) of snowshoe trails. The Panhandle Warming Hut, constructed with generous support from the U.S. Forest Service and Club members. Approximately 25 miles of trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the greater Spokane/Coeur d'Alene area with access to ungroomed backcountry trails. There are two warming huts and great views plus plenty of snow.
