One off trail option is to also hike into emigrant lake from Caples lake and after reaching Emigrant lake go off trail over the ridge line on the east connecting with the fourth of July trail just past Round Top lake. This route is for seasoned hikers who understand terrain and off trail navigation. Head to downtown Grand Lake on Friday, July 4, 2025, for our amazing annual Independence Day fireworks display! This trail is great for backpacking, fishing, and hiking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are June through October. The trail also leads past Winnemucca, Round Top, and Fourth of July Lake. There are amazing views of the surrounding granite peaks as you hike between the lakes. A nice hike with a gradual incline through rich forests and lush meadows to a beautiful lake nestled in a meadow at the base of towering mountains. An excellent day hike for most everyone and an excellent overnight hike for youth. Sharp eyes may see many types of wildlife, including deer, elk and sheep. Certainly one of the best hikes in the Lake Tahoe area, the trails to Round Top and Winnemucca Lake promise pristine alpine meadows and lakes, fast-flowing creeks, abandoned mines - and in summer, one of the finest wildflower displays to be found anywhere in Northern California. After several miles, you'll reach your halfway point at Fourth of July Lake which features a great shady picnic spot to stop before heading back. The trail is well-marked and easy to navigate. A Wilderness Permit is required for all overnight trips to the Mokelumne Wilderness Area.
