To be considered independent on the FAFSA without meeting the age requirement, an associate or bachelor's degree student must be at least one of the following: married; a U.S. veteran; in active In Congress, July 4, 1776. Then ask students to explain and compare the following passages. They sound different, but are how are they similar? Note: The source for this transcription is the first printing of the Declaration of Independence, the broadside produced by John Dunlap on the night of July 4, 1776. Nearly every printed or manuscript edition of the Declaration of Independence has slight differences in punctuation, capitalization, and even wording. The American Revolution (1775–83) was an insurrection carried out by 13 of Great Britain’s North American colonies, which won political independence and went on to form the United States of America. The war followed more than a decade of growing estrangement between the British crown and many North American colonists. Some colonies held back from endorsing independence. Resistance was centered in the middle colonies of New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Advocates of independence saw Pennsylvania as the key; if that colony could be converted to the pro-independence cause, it was believed that the others would follow. If you’re an independent student, you’ll report your own information (and, if you’re married, your spouse’s). Find out who needs to provide parent information on the FAFSA form, and learn what to do if you aren’t in contact with your parents. In 1939, the Viceroy Linlithgow declared India's entrance into the Second World War without consulting provincial governments. In protest, the Congress asked all of its elected representatives to resign from the government. An independent student meets certain legal requirements to receive federal financial aid to pay for college based on the student’s ability to pay. A dependent student’s ability to pay, by contrast, is determined by reviewing information provided by both the student and one or both parents. Students who are 24 at the time of filing or who turn 24 by December 31 of the award year are automatically considered independent. If you are under 24, you might be considered independent for federal aid purposes if: The Declaration of Independence is made up of five distinct parts: the introduction; the preamble; the body, which can be divided into two sections; and a conclusion. The introduction states that this document will "declare" the "causes" that have made it necessary for the American colonies to leave the British Empire. As a high school student, there is an expectation on the FAFSA that you are financially dependent on your parents. If you are a dependent student, your parents will need to help you fill out your FAFSA. But there are a number of ways you may be considered independent from your parents. Declaring independence from Great Britain was, of course, a pivotal moment in American history. That alone is an exceptionally good reason why every student should read the Declaration of Independence. There are, however, broader reasons having to do with republican political order, history, and liberal education. Independent students may qualify for more grants and other forms of financial aid. Can you declare yourself independent? If FAFSA considers you dependent, can you appeal dependent status? The answer depends on your circumstances. Through WUE, students can enroll in eligible programs at a reduced tuition rate, often capped at 150% of in-state tuition. Academic Common Market (ACM) For students in the Southern United States, the ACM allows access to out-of-state programs not offered in their home state. Participating states include Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida Students are considered independent on the FAFSA if they meet any of the following: • They are married. • They have dependents. • They are working toward a master’s or doctorate program during the award year. • They are veterans or active duty members of the US Armed Forces. To qualify as a FAFSA independent, you must meet one or more of these criteria: 1) at least 24 years old, 2) an orphan or in foster care, 3) an armed forces veteran, 4) a graduate student, 5) married, 6) have legal dependents, 7) be emancipated, 8) be a homeless youth or 9) have a financial aid administrator rule that you are independent.
