The July fireworks do not have a long history at Mount Rushmore which opened in 1941. They started in July of 1998 and continued through 2009. Mount Rushmore will host an Independence Day-themed fireworks display next year, bringing worldwide attention to the national memorial, but also bringing concerns about potential forest fires, water pollution, litter and other problems.
