Most visitors don’t know that many of the city’s best museums offer after-hours activities and events. From musical performances and specialized tours to delicious cocktails and free activities, the early evening options make for a perfect chance to soak up the arts and culture of DC or to learn something new at a hosted lecture with a drink in hand. Arts and Culture Of all the Smithsonian museums and facilities, only four are open daily: The National Museum of Natural History, the National Zoo, the Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center, in Chantilly, and the Smithsonian Institution Building, known as the Castle. When is the museum open? The National Museum of Natural History is seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except December 25 and January 20. Will there be security screening? For everyone’s safety, all visitors are required to go through screening during the security process. For instance, the National Museum of American History might host special programs on July 4th, while other museums might observe different hours. One great thing to do is to go wander around the staging area for the July 4th Parade. They stage on 7th Street between Constitution Avenue and Jefferson Drive.
