I am an American exchange student living in Tokyo right now. I was wondering if anyone knew of any 4th of July events happening in the area. I was looking for a place that my friends and I (all in our 20’s) could enjoy. July 21 – Marine Day Celebrated on the third Thursday in July, this honours the ocean’s importance to Japan. Traditionally, people would go to the beach or water on this day – you’ll still find some special events in waterfront areas, such as Odaiba. August 11 – Mountain Day Encourages appreciation for mountains. We all know that the 4th of July is one of the biggest American celebrations! Not only is it masterfully done regrading fireworks, but it is all around just a fun event. Japan, like many other countries, doesn’t celebrate the event, as it has its own alternatives. However, there are some places where people do celebrate it: July 4th was always a big deal in Yokohama. I never really understood what Independence Day was all about, but I enjoyed the festivities that always started the summer and came just a few weeks before Japan’s O-Bon, festival of the spirits. Third Monday of July (national holiday) Ocean Day (umi no hi): A recently introduced national holiday to celebrate the ocean. The day marks the return of Emperor Meiji from a boat trip to Hokkaido in 1876. August 11 (national holiday) Mountain Day (yama no hi): Newly introduced in 2016, this national holiday celebrates mountains.
